Even under the best of circumstances of horseback riding camps, visiting an incarcerated mother is difficult for a child, she added. "It's not a natural experience. . . . It's very rigid, very formal."

Barbara Myers, a Virginia Commonwealth University professor of psychology, said the children tend to develop problems later in life and are more likely to be incarcerated themselves one day.
