Fashion design as a profession is location centric and this applies equally when it comes to tertiary studies in fashion design and is therefore something that needs to be given due consideration when seeking to do a fashion design bachelor degree. Fashion design is an applied art dealing with lifestyle and clothing accessories and is specific to the cultural and social influences prevalent at the time in which it is created. It is different to costume design in that it is distinctly seasonal – a season being autumn/winter or spring/summer – and therefore each created fashion has a relatively short lifespan. Fashion designers can be self employed and design for individual clients or they may create original garments for specialty stores or high-fashion department stores.
