There are several tests associated with cancer of the prostate. A digital rectal exam (DRE) does just that: examines the rectum for signs of prostate cancer. The doctor or nurse checks for abnormal areas or lumps in the prostate. The prostate specific antigen (PSA) test is given in order to measure the level of PSA that is in the blood. The prostate makes PSA at an increased level when a man has prostate cancer. Men with an infection or inflammation of the prostate may also have high levels of PSA. This may cause the prostate to enlarge, but this does not mean that prostate cancer is present.
