So much viruses and spyware.

I am helping to fix my friend's laptop and it has so much viruses and spyware. Past couple days, I have been fighting these viruses. I have run many anti virus programs, but still have serious problems that remain. I have tried many things and this seems to keep coming back. Can you tell me what to do? I am grateful for any advice you may offer. Thanks!
