Music execs have long been storied for the way that they have plucked young recording artists out of nowhere and made them a star. And there is a lot of fact behind that myth. Music execs have long played a huge role in determining who ultimately “makes it” and who never gets the chance to be heard. Until recent years, they were a dominant player in setting musical tastes for the rest of us. But increasingly, musical artists are taking over the business side of their craft and driving their own destiny. This has in part been driven by decreasing revenues at major labels, which itself has been precipitated by the availability of music over the web.
